Gazdovská banka, Bardejov

Gazdovská banka (Agricultural Bank), Bardejov, was founded in 1905 under the name Gazdovská obchodná a priemyselná banka (Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Bank). Its initial capital was 120,000 Austro-Hungarian crowns (K) and it issued 800 shares with a nominal value of K 150. The share capital grew to K 180,000 in 1913 and 270,000 Czechoslovak crowns (Kč) in 1921.

The aim of the institution was to provide loans to the less wealthy classes and use their savings to promote the development of crafts and trade in the vicinity of Bardejov. The institution was authorised to carry out all banking transactions permitted by law including taking deposits, arranging various loans, selling and buying real estate, recovering debts and providing safekeeping services.

Gazdovská banka prospered. Records in financial and commercial yearbooks indicate that it made a net profit of K 12,500 in 1907. It had deposits of around K 1 million and loans amounting around K 800,000. In this period, the bank had a net turnover of K 7.5 million.

The members of the management and supervisory board were Michal Artim, Ladislav Szavkulits, Matej Szalabej and others. The chief accountant was Tomáš Tóváry and the treasurer was Alfréd Justh. Gazdovská banka continued in operation until 1924, when it was taken over by Tatra banka, Bratislava.

The surviving fragments of its archival material were kept in the archive of Štátna banka československá in Bardejov until 1963 when they were transferred to the corporate archive in Košice by order of the regional branch. In 1995 the fonds was transferred to the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska, first in the building at 27 Krajná Street in Bratislava and then, from 2003, at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava.

The files contain a small part of the bank’s balance sheets, minutes and securities. An initial temporary inventory of the fonds was made in the archive of Štátna banka československá in Košice in 1967. This was revised in the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska in 2016.
