Trenčianska obchodná a priemyselná banka, Trenčín

Trenčianska obchodná a priemyselná banka (Trenčín Commercial and Industrial Bank) was founded in 1904 under the Hungarian name Trencséni kereskedelmi és iparbank with a share capital of 120,000 Austro-Hungarian crowns (K), which was raised to K 240,000 in 1912. It was a Hungarian financial institution that focused on accepting deposits and providing mortgage loans and loans secured by promissory notes. In 1915, Ernest Ucsnay, the then mayor of Trenčín, was chairman of the bank's board of directors. Izidor Lórant became the chairman of the supervisory board and Vojtech Friedman became the bank’s managing director, in which post he was succeeded by Vojtech Forbáth in 1917. The bank grew its business gradually. In 1913, deposits on savings books amounted to K 1.85 million and it made a net profit of K 49,000. The bank paid dividends from the start of its activities.

During the First World War, deposits on savings books accumulated and reached K 5.3 million by the end of 1918. The bank dealt with the surplus of funds by depositing them in large banks in Budapest and by purchasing securities, especially war bonds.

Trenčianska obchodná a priemyselná banka was adversely impacted by the break-up of Austria-Hungary and the establishment of the first Czechoslovak Republic because its funds were tied up in Budapest. The bank came close to insolvency and savings book deposits decreased from 4.5 million Czechoslovak crowns (Kč) to Kč 3.149 million.

It decided to resolve the complex situation by merging with Slovenská banka (Slovak Bank) in Bratislava. The merger was approved by the bank’s general meeting on 24 July 1921. Trenčianska obchodná a priemyselná banka ceased to exist as an independent bank and was transformed into a branch of Slovenská banka in Trenčín.

After the merger, Slovenská banka had to deal with the mounting losses connected with the war loans subscribed by Trenčianska obchodná a priemyselná banka, whose nominal value was Kč 2.891 million, and old-crown annuities with a nominal value of over Kč 1 million. The total loss on securities amounting to Kč 1.76 million was covered by reducing the share capital, drawing on reserves and imposing a 20% haircut on deposits.

Archival documents on activities of Trenčianska obchodná a priemyselná banka were deposited in the corporate archives of Štátna banka československá (State Bank of Czechoslovakia) in Marianka in 1956, where a part of the fonds was processed and a register was made. In 1978, the fonds was relocated to the archives of Štátna banka československá at 27 Krajná Street in Bratislava. It was relocated again to the Národná banka Slovenska archives building at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava in 2003.

It consists of documents in Hungarian and in Slovak, mainly the shareholders’ registers, accounting ledgers and accounting documents from 1904 to 1922. The fonds was revised in the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska in 2017.
