Spišskopodhradská sporiteľňa, Spišské Podhradie
Spišskopodhradská sporiteľňa, účastinná spoločnosť (Spišské Podhradie Savings Bank, joint-stock company) was founded in 1868 under the equivalent Hungarian and German names Szepesváraljai takarékpénztár, r. t. / Kirchdraufer Sparkassa, A. G. It was authorised to provide universal banking services, accept deposits, provide loans, buy and sell real estate and represent foreign financial institutions.
No information is available on the bank’s activities prior to 1907. In that year, the Compass financial yearbooks report it making a net profit of 21,000 Austro-Hungarian crowns (K) with stocks of savings book deposits amounting to K 4.3 million and loans amounting to K 4 million.
From 1913 to 1915, the bank made a net profit of K 20,000 with stocks of deposits amounting to K 4 million and loans amounting to K 3.5 million.
The members of the board of directors and the supervisory board were Alexander Holénia, Alexander Szontagh, Ladislav Wyda, Róbert Vaskó, Gejza Toperczer, Ender Trieber, Frigyes Rolny, Ľudevit Polony, Imrich Handlovits, Viliam Schnatzek, Karol Szilvásy, Frigyes Mózer, Ľudovít Juhász – director, Viktor Fest – accountant, and Karol Wozárik – treasurer.
As time went by, it opened two branches – one in Kežmarok and the other in Spišské Vlachy (this latter being the result of taking over Spišskovlašsko-Krompašská sporiteľňa in 1920).
Spišskopodhradská sporiteľňa probably renamed itself Južno Spišský úverný ústav (South Spiš Credit Institute) in 1921. It remained in operation until 1924, when it entered liquidation. The liquidation was managed by Spišskonovoveská úverná banka (Spišská Nová Ves Credit Bank), which converted it into its own branch in Spišské Podhradie.
Preserved archival material on the bank was stored in the archives of Štátna banka československá (State Bank of Czechoslovakia) in Bratislava until 1965, when it was transferred to the corporate archives of Štátna banka československá at 2 Šrobárova Street in Košice by order of the Slovak Archives Administration. The fonds is now in the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava. The documents are stored in a single box. It includes fragments of the bank’s activity – a share certificate, a savings book, loan documentation and the balance sheet for 1923. An inventory of the fonds was made in 1967 and revised in the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska in 2016.
