Slovenská ľudová a hospodárska banka, Bratislava
Slovenská ľudová a hospodárska banka, družstvo s. r. o. (Slovak People’s and Farm Bank, cooperative limited liability company), Bratislava had its founding general meeting on 23 February 1924. It was founded by Slovenská ľudová banka (Slovak People's Bank), Bratislava, as an affiliated financial institution providing ‘people’s banking’ services. Its early days were focused mainly on the Záhorie region, where it took over and liquidated several credit institutes such as Pomocná pokladnica in Skalica and Živnostenský úverný ústav in Stupava. It gradually expanded its operations to cover the whole of western Slovakia. In 1938, it had 16 branches.
The same year, its share capital reached 598,000 Czechoslovak crowns (Kč) and its reserve fund reached Kč 267,000. Deposits on savings books amounted to almost Kč 14 million. The bank’s stock of loans was around Kč 14 million. The bank was staffed by officials from Slovenská ľudová banka. The chairman of the board of directors was Ľudovít Okánik and the deputy chairman was Jozef Bordáč, the managing director of Slovenská ľudová banka.
After the establishment of the Slovak State in 1939, the consolidation of the Slovak banking industry was intensified. Slovenská ľudová a hospodárska banka was placed in liquidation by Decree No 27.363/41-VI/16 of the Ministry of Finance of 22 December 1941. The ministry selected Sedliacka banka (Farmer Bank), Bratislava, to be its liquidator. In 1948, Decision No 1204/48-VI/18 of the Executive Authority for Finance of 30 January 1948 transferred oversight of the liquidation to Slovenská banka (Slovak Bank), Bratislava. On 3 May 1948, in accordance with Decision No 76.383/48-III/5 of the Ministry of Finance of 15 April 1948, Slovenská ľudová a hospodárska banka requested the Regional Court in Bratislava to register a new liquidator – Slovenská Tatra banka (Slovak Tatra Bank), Bratislava. The liquidation process continued until 1951 when the entire asset base was transferred to the Regional Institute for Slovakia of Štátna banka československá in Bratislava (State Bank of Czechoslovakia) by order of the Executive Authority for Finance. An agreement on the transfer was concluded on 8 November 1951 and approved by the Executive Authority for Finance on 14 November 1951 under No 113/3398/1951, based on the situation as of 15 November 1951. The transfer completed the liquidation of the bank and on 10 December 1951 it asked the District Court in Bratislava to delete its entry in the Companies Register.
In 1956, archival documents on activities of Slovenská ľudová a hospodárska banka were deposited in a disorganised condition in the corporate archives of Štátna banka československá in Marianka, where a part of the fonds was processed and a register was made. In 1978, the fonds was transferred to the archives of Štátna banka československá at 27 Krajná Street in Bratislava and in 2003 it was relocated to the Národná banka Slovenska archives building at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava. A temporary inventory of the fonds was drawn up in 2016. The fonds of Slovenská ľudová a hospodárska banka can be used in studying the history of people’s banking in Slovakia and the banking consolidation process between 1939 and 1945.
