Ružomberská všeobecná banka, Ružomberok

This institution was established in 1869 under the name Ružomberská sporiteľňa (Savings Bank of Ružomberok; in Hungarian, Rózsahegyi takarékpénztár) with a share capital of 60,000 guldens. After Austria-Hungary changed its currency to the gold-backed crown, the share capital was valued at 120,000 Austro-Hungarian crowns (K). In 1905 it was raised to K 240,000 and in 1918 to K 1 million. For many years the chairman of the board of directors was Jakub Klein, the director was Adolf Kartal and the treasurer was Adolf Glasner. Between 1896 and 1905, the bank paid relatively high dividends from 8% to 15%. The bank participated in the establishment and financing of the Ružomberok paper and pulp works and other paper-making enterprises in Ružomberok.

After the establishment of the first Czechoslovak Republic, it suffered losses due to having underwritten war loans and its share capital being tied up in Budapest. After the adoption of the Savings Bank Act in 1920, it was forced to change its name and became Ružomberská všeobecná banka (Ružomberok General Bank). It remained in business until 1933, when its general meeting approved a merger with Banka československých légií (Bank of the Czechoslovak Legions, Legiobanka) in Prague, whereupon it ceased to operate as an independent credit institution and became a branch of this Czech bank.

The only surviving documentation of the Ružomberská všeobecná banka is one general ledger covering the period 1932 to 1939 and an auxiliary ledger of deposits for the period 1928 to 1931. The fonds may be of use in studies of the bank’s clientele after 1918. The bank’s archival documents were initially kept in the corporate archives of Štátna banka československá (State Bank of Czechoslovakia)  in Ružomberok, where they were put in order and an inventory was made in 1968. They were transferred to the archives of Národná banka Slovenska in Bratislava in 1993 and they are currently stored in its archive building at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava, where the inventory was revised in 2016.
