Prvá malacká banka, Malacky
This financial institution was established in 1871 under the name Malacká sporiteľňa (Malacky Savings Bank, in Hungarian Malaczkai takarékpénztár, in German Malackaer Sparkassa) with share capital of 60,000 guldens, which became 120,000 Austro-Hungarian crowns (K) after the changeover to a currency based on the gold standard in 1900. In 1912 the share capital was increased to K 375,000 and it was increased again to K 1 million before the end of 1918.
The bank’s managers and shareholders came from the ranks of local artisans, merchants, landowners and medium-sized farmers. In 1881 the bank was led by Samuel Kelényi and members of the board of directors included Ignác Lederer, Adolf Spitzer, Leopold Spitzer and Mór Spitzer amongst others. The chairman of the supervisory board was Karol Soupper and the treasurer was Ján Röhrih.
Until 1918 the bank carried on a prospering business serving the local landowners, medium-sized farmers, artisans and trades workers. It made relatively high net profits and paid regular dividends ranging from 7% to 12%.
The bank’s lending was reduced during the First World War and major investments in war loans led to significant losses. In 1921 it changed its name to comply with the Savings Bank Act and became Hospodárska a obchodná účastinná spoločnosť (Farm and Commercial Joint-Stock Company). It also concluded an affiliation agreement with Slovenská všeobecná úverná banka, Bratislava. In 1924 it changed its name again, becoming Prvá malacká banka (First Malacky Bank) and it concluded an agreement on a merger with Bratislavská priemyselná banka (Bratislava Industrial Bank), Bratislava. This merger was approved by the general meeting on 10 April 1925, whereupon Prvá malacká banka ceased to operate as an independent financial institution and became a branch of Bratislavská priemyselná banka. The liquidation of its assets and liabilities continued until at least 1936.
All that survives of the documentation of Prvá malacká banka are a very few documents from the period 1923 – 1926 covering the last phase of its existence and the merger with Bratislavská priemyselná banka. These documents were deposited in the corporate archive of Štátna banka československá at Marianka in 1956. Since 2003 the fonds has been kept in the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava. A basic register of the fonds was made in 2012 and revised in 2016. The documents are written in Hungarian, German and Slovak and can contribute to research on the history of banking in the Záhorie region and the consolidation process in Slovak banking in the interwar period.
