Národný úverný ústav, Budapest (Nové Zámky and Rimavská Sobota branches)

Národný úverný ústav (National Credit Institute; in Hungarian, Nemzeti Hitelintézet), Budapest, was established in 1920 with share capital of 40 million Hungarian crowns, which was raised to 6 billion Hungarian crowns in 1924. After the changeover to a new currency in 1925, the capital was valued at 2 million pengő. The share capital was gradually increased to reach 4 million pengő in 1940. After the Vienna Arbitration awarded a part of southern Slovakia to Hungary in 1938, several Budapest banks expanded into the territory. In 1940 the National Credit Institute in Budapest established two branches in the present-day territory of Slovakia: in Nové Zámky and in Rimavská Sobota. In addition to regular banking operations, the Rimavská Sobota branch also had an interest in logging and the sale of timber. The branches actively operated only until the end of 1944, when the war crippled their activities.

After the end of the Second World War, the Executive Authority for Finance appointed a national administration for the branch of Národný úverný ústav in Rimavská Sobota on 28 February 1946. It consisted of Belo Cajchan, an authorised signatory of the Tatra banka branch in Rimavská Sobota, Vladimír Rúfus, an officer of the Tatra banka branch in Rimavská Sobota and Štefan Klincko, an accountant of the District National Committee in Rimavská Sobota. On 12 July 1946, however, the Executive Authority for Finance ordered the liquidation of the branch, appointing František Kluvánek as liquidator. The liquidator was recalled in 1947 and the process was entrusted to Ústredná likvidačná kancelária (Central Liquidation Office) in Bratislava. In 1949, Slovenská Tatra banka (Slovak Tatra banka), Bratislava, took over the liquidation. The liquidation was closed in 1951 after an agreement was concluded on 8 November 1951 with the Regional Institute for Slovakia of Štátna banka československá, for it to take over all assets and liabilities of the Rimavská Sobota branch.

The Executive Authority for Finance appointed a temporary administration for the Nové Zámky branch from 30 June 1945, whose members were Jozef Barák, Ferdinand Stískal and Jozef Ďuriš-Frndák. From 29 January 1946 this was replaced by a national administration consisting of Rudolf Štohl, Štefan Lányi and Ferdinand Stískal. On 12 July 1946, the Executive Authority for Finance ordered the liquidation of the branch, appointing Eugen Kerný as liquidator. The liquidator was recalled on 27 October 1947 and the process was entrusted to Ústredná likvidačná kancelária (Central Liquidation Office) in Bratislava. In 1949, Slovenská Tatra banka, Bratislava, took over the liquidation. The liquidation of this branch was closed in 1951, upon the conclusion of an agreement transferring all of its assets and liabilities to the Regional Institute for Slovakia of Štátna banka československá.

The preserved documents of the Nové Zámky branch cover the period 1939 to 1951 and relate mainly to lending activities and the liquidation of the branch. The preserved archival material was placed in the corporate archives of Štátna banka československá at Marianka in 1956, from where it was transferred to the archives of Štátna banka československá at 27 Krajná Street in Bratislava in 1976.

The preserved documents of the Rimavská Sobota branch cover the period from 1928 to 1951. This fonds consists mainly of balance sheets and files related to the liquidation of the branch. Until 1992 these archival documents were kept in the Regional Corporate Archive of Štátna banka československá in Ružomberok, where a basic register was made for them in 1968. In 1993, the documents were transferred to the archives of Národná banka Slovenska at 27 Krajná Street in Bratislava, where they were merged with the documents of the Nové Zámky branch in a single fonds.

The merged archival fonds was transferred to the building at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava in 2003 and an inventory was made for it.
