Košická ľudová banka, Košice

Košická ľudová banka, účastinná spoločnosť (Košice People’s Bank, joint-stock company), Košice, was established in 1871 under the name Kassai népbank, r. t.

No information has survived about the bank’s activities from its establishment until 1907. According to data from the Compass year books, its net profit for 1907 was 37,000 Austro-Hungarian crowns (K), deposits amounted to K 4 million and loans were around K 5 million. In 1922 its net profit reached 225,000 Czechoslovak crowns (Kč), savings book deposits were Kč 7.7 million and granted loans amounted to Kč 9 million. The total turnover was Kč 100 million. The share capital was gradually increased to reach Kč 1.5 million in 1921. This was represented by 10,000 shares with a nominal value of Kč 150 each. The bank’s main activities were taking deposits, providing loans backed by mortgages and promissory notes, and the purchase and sale of securities, currency, foreign exchange and real estate.

Members of the board of directors and supervisory board included, amongst others, Róbert Rélay, Ľudovit Hegedus, Oskár Fest, Albert Schlesinger and Karol Beller. The treasurer was Nándor Kozmann. The bank was placed in liquidation in 1926. The liquidation was managed by Roľnícka vzájomná pokladnica in Košice, which subsequently took over the bank in 1927.

Preserved archival material on the bank was stored in the archive of Štátna banka československá in Bratislava until 1965, when it was transferred to the corporate archive of Štátna banka československá at 2 Šrobárova Street in Košice by order of the Slovak Archives Administration. It comprises a single archival box. The documents were relocated to the Národná banka Slovenska archives building at 27 Krajná Street in Bratislava in 1990. They were relocated again to the building at 8 Cukrová in Bratislava in 2003. An initial inventory of the fonds was made at the archive of Štátna banka československá in 1967 and this was revised at the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska in 2016.
