Košická hypotečná banka, Košice

Košická hypotečná banka, účastinná spoločnosť (Košice Mortgage Bank, joint-stock company), Košice, was established in 1874 under the Hungarian name Kassai jelzálogbank, r. t., and was under the influence of the Hungarian Commercial Bank of Pest in Budapest.

The company was authorised to engage in all banking transactions permitted by law; it could take deposits, grant loans, buy and sell real estate, represent foreign financial institutions, recover various debts and provide safekeeping services.

On the eve of the First World War, the bank’s share capital amounted to 2 million Austro-Hungarian crowns (K). This was represented by 10,000 shares with a nominal value of K 200 each. Between 1913 and 1915, its average net profit was K 250,000. Savings book deposits amounted to K 7.5 million and loans amounted to K 7 million. Information on the bank’s activities and results between 1916 and 1921 is no longer available. In 1922 it made a net profit of around 300,000 Czechoslovak crowns (Kč). Deposits had grown to over Kč 17 million and granted loans amounted to Kč 25 million.

The members of the bank’s board of directors and supervisory board were Ladislav Szmrecsányi, František Beziak, Fülöp Weisz, Vojtech Gerloczy, Július Siposs, Ján Eckerd, František Mildner, Mikša Fehér and Ladislav Szalay, amongst others. The bank continued in operation until 1924 when its situation deteriorated and it was placed in liquidation. Its activities ceased in 1926. It was an affiliate of Bratislavská všeobecná banka in Bratislava.

The bank’s surviving archival material was kept in the archive of Štátna banka československá in Bratislava until 1965. It was then moved to the corporate archive of Štátna banka československá at 2 Šrobárova Street in Košice by order of the Slovak Archives Administration. The documents were relocated to the Národná banka Slovenska archives building at 27 Krajná Street in Bratislava in 1990. It was transferred to the building at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava in 2003.

An initial inventory of the fonds was prepared in the archive of Štátna banka československá in 1967. This inventory was revised at the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska in 2016. The preserved documentation consisted of one box containing the annual reports for 1911 – 1912. The annual reports for 1909, 1914 and 1916 were added through acquisitions.
