Hospodárska banka, Michalovce

Hospodárska banka, účastinná spoločnosť (Farm Bank, joint-stock company), Michalovce, was founded in 1904. It had one branch in Snina. Its initial share capital was 200,000 Austro-Hungarian crowns (K). In 1908 the share capital was doubled to K 400,000. It issued 4,000 shares with a nominal value of K 100 each.

The bank was authorised to carry out all banking transactions permitted by law including taking deposits, arranging loans, selling and buying real estate, recovering debts and providing safekeeping services. It was one of the small financial institutions. In 1907 it reported a net profit of K 26,000, deposits in passbooks amounted to K 500,000 and loans amounted to nearly K 1 million. The bank’s overall turnover was K 19 million.

In the period 1913 to 1915, deposits increased to K 2 million, loans to K 1.5 million and the net profit reached K 21,000. The business year 1915 showed a decline, especially in lending. In this year, the bank had a loss of K 174,000. In 1922, it was in the black again with a net profit of 55,000 Czechoslovak crowns (Kč), deposits on savings books amounting to Kč 4 million and loans of Kč 3 million.

The members of the board of directors and supervisory board included Samuel Glück, Imrich Tolvay, Ľudevit Brugler and Dávid Herskovits amongst others; the chief accountant was Gyozo Bódy and the treasurer Benjamín Brugler.

Hospodárska banka was placed in liquidation in 1923 and by 1927 it was taken over by Dunajská banka, which established a branch in Michalovce.

All that has survived of the bank’s documentation is two account books, which were kept in the archive of Štátna banka československá in Humenné until 1962, when they were transferred to the corporate archive in Košice by order of the regional branch. In 1990 the fonds was relocated to the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska at 27 Krajná Street in Bratislava and in 2003 it was moved to the building at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava.

An inventory of the fonds was made at the archive of Štátna banka československá in 1963 and this was revised at the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska in 2016.
