Gemerský účastinársky spolok pre tovarový obchod a bankový závod, Rimavská Sobota
Gemerský účastinársky spolok pre tovarový obchod a bankový závod (Gemer joint-stock company for commodity trading and banking) was established in Rimavská Sobota in 1917 under the Hungarian name Gömörmegyei áruforgalmi részvénytársaság with share capital amounting to 100,000 Austro-Hungarian crowns (K). It was in the sphere of influence of Gemerská ľudová a priemyselná banka, Rimavská Sobota (Gemer People’s and Industrial Bank). It mainly focused on the sale of wood, coal and other commodities on commission.
Its share capital was raised to K 200,000 in 1918 and to 400,000 Czechoslovak crowns (Kč) in 1922. The post-war economic crisis had an adverse effect on the company’s sales and the general meeting placed the company in liquidation in 1923. However, in 1927, it undertook a restructuring involving a reduction of the share capital to Kč 200,000, the adoption of a modified name Gemerská účastinná spoločnosť pre tovarový obchod a bankový závod (Gemer joint-stock company for commodity trading and banking) and an expansion into banking services such as the provision of loans and the purchase of securities. Even so, the company did not prosper and made losses year after year, which reached Kč 527,000 in 1937.
The company remained in business when Rimavská Sobota was annexed to Hungary between 1938 and 1945 but its situation did not improve. Its losses in 1944 were equal to Kč 163,000. The company’s liquidation was ordered in 1946 and completed in 1951, after the liquidation and writing off of all losses.
A small number of archival documents, mostly in Hungarian, have been preserved from the activities of this company, which can be used to study the history of a local financial institution in the first half of the 20th century. It was a mixed type of company that combined wholesale trade with lending.
The bank’s archival documents were initially kept in the corporate archive of Štátna banka československá in Ružomberok, where they were sorted in 1968 and a temporary inventory was made. In 1993 the fonds was transferred to the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska in Bratislava, where the inventory was revised in 2016.
