Gazdovská ľudová banka pre Oslany a okolie, Oslany

Gazdovská ľudová banka pre Oslany a okolie, účastinná spoločnosť (Agricultural Bank for Oslany and its Surroundings, joint stock company; officially in Hungarian Oszlány és vidéke gazdasági népbank, r. t.), was established in Oslany in 1911 by the conversion of a cooperative of the same name into a bank through an issue of shares. It was a small Hungarian financial institution with capital of 100,000 Austro-Hungarian crowns (K) in the form of 1,000 shares with a nominal value of K 100. In 1913 the bank provided loans backed by promissory notes, mortgages and current accounts amounting in total to K 380,000 while holding deposits amounting to K 242,000. It generated a net profit of K 10,163. In 1912 and 1913, it paid out dividends at a rate of 6%. The chairman of the board in 1913 was Egon Szentivány and his deputy was Štefan Popoczky.

In 1917, deposits in the bank had grown to K 361,470 and it owned securities with a nominal value of K 232,164. As a result of the war, total loans decreased to K 240,315 and the net profit was K 6,118, which was reflected in reduced dividends at a rate of 5%. During the First World War, the bank was managed by Štefan Kosztolányi.

The dissolution of Austria-Hungary and the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic created problems for this Oslany-based bank because of significant investments tied up in Budapest. It managed to have a part of its funds that had been invested in war loans recognised as claims against the Czechoslovak Republic with help from the banking industry association Jednota peňažných ústavov na Slovensku a Podkarpatskej Rusi (Association of Financial Institutions in Slovakia and Sub-Carpathian Ruthenia) in Bratislava. Between 1920 and 1924, it paid no dividends and officially reported a loss of 13,000 Czechoslovak crowns (Kč). Gazdovská ľudová banka pre Oslany a okolie ceased to function as an independent entity in 1926, when it merged with Tekovská ľudová banka and became its sub-branch in Oslany.

Archival documents related to the bank’s activity were transported to the corporate archive of Štátna banka československá in Marianka in 1956. Here, a part of the fonds was processed and a register was made. The fonds was relocated to the Štátna banka československá archives building at 27 Krajná Street in Bratislava in 1978. It was relocated again to the Národná banka Slovenska archives building at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava in 2003.

It includes a very small number of documents – a book of minutes of the bank’s management from 1911 to 1927 and two of the bank’s account books for the period 1911 – 1934, which are written in Hungarian. An inventory of the fonds was made in 2019.
