Ružomberská priemyselná banka, Ružomberok
Ružomberská priemyselná banka (Ružomberok Industrial Bank) was established in 1889 with share capital amounting to 50,000 guldens. After Austria-Hungary changed over to the gold-backed crown currency, the share capital was valued at 100,000 Austro-Hungarian crowns (K). This was raised to K 200,000 in 1902 and K 400,000 in 1909.
The bank was founded as a protest by some of the staff and shareholders of Ružomberský úverkový účastinný spolok (Ružomberok Joint Stock Credit Society), which had been founded by the Makovický family in 1879. For many years the chairman of the bank’s board of directors was Karol Krčméry and his deputy was Ján Števček. Between 1906 and 1918, the bank paid relatively high dividends, ranging from 8% to 14%.
Its situation changed after the establishment of the first Czechoslovak Republic, when it suffered losses from war loans that it had underwritten and its share capital was tied up in Budapest. It experienced severe difficulties during the post-war economic crisis. In 1926 the general meeting approved liquidation of the bank, which lasted until 1930, with the bank reaching a settlement that gave depositors 50% and creditors 60% of their claims.
The surviving documentation of Ružomberská priemyselná banka consists of one book of minutes of the general meeting and the committee covering the period 1922 to 1925. This archival document was initially entered in the corporate archives of Štátna banka československá (State Bank of Czechoslovakia) in Ružomberok, where a temporary inventory was made in 1968. In 1993 the document was transferred to the archives of Národná banka Slovenska at 27 Krajná Street and in 2003 it was moved to the building at 8 Cukrová Street, where the inventory was expanded in 2016.
