Roľnícky dom, Bratislava

Roľnícky dom, družstvo s ručením obmedzeným, Bratislava (Agriculture House, limited liability cooperative, Bratislava) was established on 17 September 1931 in Bratislava. Initially it had 14 members, who subscribed for 5,012 shares at Kč 100 each. The first board of directors consisted of Ján Ursíny, Vojtech Havlůj, Ján Halla, Martin Lednár, Jaromír Junek and Alfons Kubala. Martin Lednár became the chairman and Ján Ursíny the vice-chairman. The chairman of the supervisory board was Vladimír Pivko and the vice-chairman Bohumil Římal.

The cooperative was a member of the Ústredné družstvo (Central Cooperative) in Bratislava and also of the Roľnícka vzájomná pokladnica (Farmers’ Mutual Treasury) in Bratislava. It purchased a building from the Sprintzl brothers on what is today the SNP Square (then Hurban Square). In 1933, the then Minister of Agriculture, Milan Hodža, announced plans to construct a new building for the Zväz roľníckych vzájomných pokladníc (ZRVP – Association of Farmers’ Mutual Treasuries), which prompted the board of Roľnícky dom to accelerate their own construction plans. Through a change in the articles of association, Roľnícky dom became a member of the central audit office of the ZRVP in Bratislava. Ján Obuch became a member of the management. The cooperative’s notices were published in the periodical Roľnícke rozhľady (Farming Outlook).

Emil Belluš, Juraj Tvarožek and Miloš Svitavský contributed to the plans for demolishing the old building and the design of the new building. In the end, Emil Belluš was selected as the architect and Juraj Tvarožek as the construction supervisor. The old building’s demolition began in 1934. Elo Šándor became vice-chairman of the supervisory board. A building committee was formed to manage contracts for the construction work.

The close ties between Roľnícky dom and the ZRVP are demonstrated by the fact that the ZRVP covered cost overruns on the building amounting to more than Kč 1.5 million.

In September 1936 the general meeting of Roľnícky dom approved a merger with the ZRVP, which took effect on 31 December 1936. Shares in Roľnícky dom were exchanged for shares in the ZRVP at a ratio of 5:1.

The Archives of Národná banka Slovenska hold minutes of the board of directors, the building committee and technical documentation on the building. The archival material was found and taken out of the ZRVP’s documents during processing and a register of the Roľnícky dom fonds was created in 2024.
