Podkarpatská banka, Uzhgorod (Prešov branch)

Podkarpatská banka, účastinná spoločnosť (Sub-Carpathian Bank, joint-stock company), Uzhgorod was founded in 1920. The credit institution had share capital of 5 million Czechoslovak crowns (Kč). This was represented by 10,000 shares, each having a nominal value of Kč 500. In the same year as the headquarters was set up, branches were opened in Mukachevo, Jasina and Michalovce and a sub-branch was opened in Akna Slatina. The bank’s Prešov branch was opened in 1925.

The bank was authorised to provide universal banking services – taking deposits, arranging loans, selling and buying real estate, recovering debts and providing safekeeping/custody services. According to data from the Compass financial and commercial yearbooks, in 1922 the bank made a net profit of Kč 494,000, it had Kč 6.6 million in deposits on savings books and it had granted loans amounting to Kč 8 million.

The board members were Augustín Vološýn, Michael Hančin and Valentin Gerzov, the general director was Konštantín Hrabor and the director was Vasil Fedinec. The bank operated until 1941 when it was wound up together with its branches.

The only surviving document is one book of current accounts. This was kept in the corporate archives of Štátna banka československá (State Bank of Czechoslovakia) in Humenne until 1962, when it was transferred to the corporate archives of Štátna banka československá in Košice. After 1990, the fonds was transferred to the archives of Národná banka Slovenska at 27 Krajná Street in Bratislava and in 2003 it was relocated to its archive building at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava. An initial inventory was made in 1963 and it was expanded in 2016 in the archives of Národná banka Slovenska.
