Občiansky úverný ústav, Sečovce

Občiansky úverný ústav (Citizens’ Credit Institute), Sečovce, was probably established in 1922 under the name Židovské úverné družstvo v Sečovciach (Jewish Credit Cooperative in Sečovce). In 1929 it had subscribed capital of 190,363 Czechoslovak crowns (Kč) and subscribed deposits of Kč 2.5 million. It provided mainly paper credit to both its members and other merchants and tradespeople of Jewish nationality. Such loans amounted to Kč 1.6 million in 1929. The chairman of the cooperative was Josef Neumann, and the director was Pavol Herskovics. Before 1939, control and audit was probably carried out by Slovenská ľudová a hospodárska banka (Slovak People´s and Farm Bank), Bratislava.

After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1939, the cooperative was “arianised” by excluding Jewish members and managers. At a general meeting on 21 January 1942, the name of the institute was changed to Občiansky úverný ústav, Sečovce, and a new management was elected, headed by Vladimír Mutňanský, a notary public. The cooperative became a member institution of Živnozväz, Bratislava, but Order No 7970/44-VI/16 of 1 August 1944 put it into liquidation, which was entrusted to Sedliacka banka (Farmer Bank), Bratislava. In 1948, Slovenská Tatra banka (Slovak Tatra Bank), Bratislava, took over the liquidation. The precise completion date of the liquidation of Občiansky úverný ústav, Sečovce, is not known.

The activities of the institute are documented by 9 books covering the period 1935 to 1944 and 4 boxes of files. Information about its activities can also be found in the archival fonds of Živnozväz and Sedliacka banka. The preserved archival material was entered in the corporate archives of Štátna banka československá (State Bank of Czechoslovakia) in Košice. After 1990, the fonds became part of the archives of Národná banka Slovenska kept at 27 Krajná Street in Bratislava. It was transferred to the building at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava in 2003. A partial inventory of the fonds was made in the corporate archives of Štátna banka československá in 1967 and this was revised in the archives of Národná banka Slovenska in 2016.
