Fraštácka banka, Hlohovec
Fraštácka banka in Hlohovec was founded in 1872 with the official name Galgóczy takarékpénztár, r. t. (Savings Bank of Frašták, joint stock company). It had a share capital of 120,000 Austro-Hungarian guldens, which was valued at 240,000 Austro-Hungarian crowns (K) in 1900 following the currency reform. The share capital was raised to K 360,000 in 1910 and K 720,000 in 1917.
The bank experienced favourable growth to 1918, focussing mainly on small loans to local tradespeople, craft workers and merchants. Most such loans were secured by mortgages.
After the establishment of the first Czechoslovak Republic, it recovered from the losses caused by underwriting war loans relatively quickly and gradually stabilised its position. It reported net profits every year – e.g. 41,994 Czechoslovak crowns (Kč) in 1920 and Kč 39,814 in 1921. During this period, it regularly paid out 4% dividends.
Due to the savings bank act of 1920, it was forced to change its name to Fraštácka banka in 1921. It merged with the Fraštácky úverný ústav (Frašták Credit Institute) in 1926 and increased its share capital to Kč 800,000. It came under the influence of Slovenská všeobecná úverná banka (Slovak General Credit Bank) in Bratislava. It remained an independent financial institution until 1930, when it merged with Trnavská I. banka (First Trnava Bank), Trnava.
Only a small part of the bank’s archival documents has been preserved. Besides the internal and commercial rules of 1873 and the annual report for 1920, most of them are credit files on the bank’s clients. In 1956, the bank’s documents were transferred to the corporate archives of Štátna banka československá (State Bank of Czechoslovakia) in Marianka. Partial processing was carried out in 2013, at the building of the Archives of Národná banka Slovenska at 8 Cukrová Street in Bratislava, where they are now stored.
